LEGISLATIVE UPDATE – 2018

WEEK TWO

The legislative session is off to a very slow start.  Since last Monday was a federal holiday, the legislature was not in session, and weather affected two other days this week.

On Thursday, the Senate passed SB 317.  The bill would allow the citizens of Fulton County to vote on a homestead exemption from school taxes.  SB 317 will crossover to the House side for consideration.

Both the House and Senate met for a short calendar on Friday.  No committee meetings of education related interest were scheduled during the second week.

The House Appropriations Subcommittee for Education will meet on Monday, January 22, 2018 at 3:00 p.m.  The posted agenda indicates that the committee will hear a presentation from the Department of Education.  The committee will make its recommendation to the full House Appropriations Committee on the FY18 Amended Budget and the FY19 Budget before a full House vote.  The budgets would then move on to the Senate for consideration and a vote.  If differences between the House and Senate versions exist, a conference committee would be appointed to negotiate and settle the differences.
